Beara Peninsula

Kenmare Virtual Tour

Beara is one of the undiscovered gems of South West Ireland. The roads are too small for coaches and you'll need to rent a car

to see Beara properly. Public Transport is very limited. Anyway you want to go off and explore don't you ?

I've added another page of Beara Photographs as there's SO much to see on the Beara Peninsula.

You'll find lots of things I haven't included - almost every turn has a standing stone ,harbour or other place of interest.

Kenmare is probably the best place to stay while you explore the Beara Peninsula but there are very good B&B's and hotels throughout the peninsula.

The trip around will take you a full day as the roads are a little slow. Sometimes they are a bit narrow too .. look out for wandering sheep.

Deer are a bit of a road hazard towards dusk and you might see them anywhere that's wooded.

Please be careful exploring as there are some bogs around and it can be very difficult to get out of one !

(A sign of a bog is tall groups of reedy grasses... it get squelchy underfoot really fast ... walk backwards to get out safely)

As Castletownbere is such a great fishing port, it would be a shame to miss out on a fish lunch at one of the pubs or restaurants there.

You will be hard put to get fresher fish anywhere in Ireland.

If you're a keen fisherman then you'll be delighted with the Beara - hire a boat and go fishing on the Cloonee Lakes from the Lake House Inn on the R571

- it's where the local fishing club goes to fish ! Or try your hand at Sea Angling - there are many spots around the Beara where you'll see signposts pointing to where you really WILL catch fish ! - And they tell you what you'll catch there too !
